What is barium sulphate?
Barium Sulphate (BaSO₄) is a white powder that does not dissolve easily in water. It is also practically insoluble in ethanol and diethyl ether.
The grade required varies with the market you are supplying for pharmaceutical use. That is why we offer Barium Sulphate USP, BP, EP & JP grades.
Each pharmacopoeia has its own requirements for different quality parameters. We test the product in our R&D department

Available USP, BP, EP & JP Grades
We offer Barium Sulphate according to four major pharmacopoeial standards: USP, BP, EP, and JP.
The testing requirements are different for each standard, so we keep the results for each grade separate.
USP Grade
Our tested USP batch contained 98.4% BaSO₄. The USP specification is 97.5% to 100.5%.
The same batch recorded:
pH: 8.6, within the specified range of 3.5–10.0
Heavy metals: Less than 10 ppm
Acid-soluble substances: 0.14%, against a maximum of 0.3%
Sulfide: Complies with USP requirements
These results were within the specified USP requirements.
EP Grade
For our tested EP batch, acid-soluble substances were 6 mg, against a maximum limit of 15 mg.
The batch also recorded:
Soluble barium salts: Less than 10 ppm
Heavy metals: Less than 10 ppm
Loss on ignition: 1.18%, against a maximum of 2.0%
The required appearance, solubility, and identification tests also complied with EP requirements.
BP Grade
Our tested BP batch recorded 0.12% acid-soluble substances, against a maximum limit of 0.3%.
Other results included:
Soluble barium salts: Less than 10 ppm
Heavy metals: Less than 10 ppm
Loss on ignition: 0.94%, against a maximum of 2.0%
The batch also passed the specified appearance, solubility, identification, and acidity or alkalinity tests.
JP Grade
Our JP grade is a white, odorless, and tasteless powder. It is practically insoluble in water, ethanol, and diethyl ether.
The supplied batch complied with the specified JP tests for identification, heavy metals, arsenic, phosphate, sulfide, hydrochloric acid-soluble substances, and soluble barium salts.
